WEAVER HOUSE - PROJECT PLANNING AND DRAFTING
Skill level: beginner
March 19 (Wed), 6-8pm EST (virtual)
This virtual workshop is designed for beginner weavers who are seeking guidance on how to plan woven projects and create/edit weave drafts! Students will learn the basics of how to plan their own projects and determine specifications such as: warp and weft yarns, warp width and length, epi, reading a harness draft, etc. They will also learn about using a sketchbook to record project notes (based on the Weaver House weaver notes: project planning notebooks), how and why to sample, labeling samples and general studio practice knowledge. Weaver notes is a set of notebooks that were designed in the Weaver House studio for planning weaving projects. You do not need to own these notebooks to take this course — but you might be convinced to purchase them after!
Students will also learn a brief overview of Weave-it software, a weaving application for creating, designing and displaying weaving drafts and patterns. Weave-it is immensely helpful for designing weave drafts and project planning, and is a valuable resource for weavers who are looking to create a catalog of weave drafts. Participants will not need to purchase this software in order to take this workshop – everything learned in Weave-it is also applicable to hand-drafting on grid paper.
Most of the information covered in this course will apply to multi-shaft weaving, although rigid heddle weavers may still find it useful (especially if you’re considering making the jump from the rigid heddle to the floor loom).
